General TT Research

From my previous article (Travel Trailer Requirements & Things to Look At) Here’s a quick list of our requirements for our next Travel Trailer (TT).

  • Battery disconnect
  • Exterior shower
  • Bunks
  • Big bathroom
  • CPAP machine night stands with outlets
  • Walk-On roof
  • 15k Ducted AC
  • Power tongue jack
  • TV location that is easy to view throughout the TT
  • Dry Hitch Weight under 900# – Preferably under 700#
  • Trailer GVWR under 9000#

I started my search by looking at all the TT brands/models that are listed on this website (All TT Manufacturers). I don’t know how up-to-date it is with the latest RV dealers but it seems pretty accurate. I found it to be incredibly helpful! Thanks Changing Gears for putting that together. Lots of great info on their site! It is a little out of date though because Grand Design doesn’t show up here. They introduced their TT’s into the market in 2013.

Below is a complete and running list of TT’s I’ve looked into that have in some way met our requirements. At least to the point of looking into them further.

The general way I depict the lineup is as follows:

  • Manufacturer
    • Make
      • Model & Length (rounded up to the nearest foot)
        • Characteristics like HW (Dry Hitch Weight) and other notes.

Here’s my list, not really in any particular order:

  • Grand Design – Imagine 2800 BH 32′
    • HW 575#
    • 2018 mid year + models have outdoor shower sprayer in docking station.
    • 2018 or newer model has door to bedroom!
    • Standard 15k btu AC unit
    • This model is our #1 pick so far. For more information see: Travel Trailers Currently in the Running
    • Toured on 6/9/17 at Pleasureland RV in St. Cloud
      • They have high turnover so they have the newest built units. More so than other dealers!
  • Forest River
    • Rockwood ultra lite
      • 2702ws 33′ See flagstaff 27bews
        • HW 870#
        • Concerned about HW
        • This is our 3rd choice of RV currently. For more information see: Travel Trailers Currently in the Running
        • Interior is darker (all brown wood), more closed off feeling and seems to be getting dated.
        • Universal doesn’t stock this model but can order it for us.
      • 2706ws 33′
        • Concerns
          • HW is higher than we’d like.
          • Bathroom toilet space
            • Even though the bathroom is bigger, the toilet is turned far to the right which doesn’t leave much for leg space.
          • No bathroom storage cabinet as it is bolted shut
            • Probably where water pump is.
            • This will likely be difficult to maintain.
        • Like the space.
        • Tv moves out into space with cubby behind.
        • Toured on 6/3/17 at Universal Marine and RV in Rochester
        • Interior is darker (all brown wood), more closed off feeling and seems to be getting dated.
        • Like the cloth couch option that Universal has ordered. Does lighten up the interior a bit.
    • Flagstaff Super Lite
      • 27bews 33′ See Rockwood 2702ws
      • 27bhws 33′ See Rockwood 2706ws
    • Hemisphere hyper lyte 27bhhl 33′
      • HW 605#
      • No radius ceiling
      • Same as Heritage Glen 27bhhl
  • Keystone
    • Cougar xlite
      • All models
        • Have dry HWs all over 1k#
        • Lots of negative Keystone reviews on YouTube and elsewhere online. Mainly due to plumbing leaks, slide leaks, and roof leaks. People very frustrated with working with them.
        • Nice big windows.
      • 29bhs 34′
        • Neat layout
        • King bed
        • Don’t know if the outdoor shower location is good.
      • 32fkb 35′
        • King bed
        • Neat cub house
  • Heartland
    • All Products
      • There aren’t any roof ladders on any of their models.
        • Leaves a question as to if the roof truly is walk-able?
      • TVs spin from living room to bedroom and don’t extend into living room.
        • This means that people will have to turn their heads to view the TV in the living room.
    • North Trail
      • Nt king 28 dbss 34′
        • HW 644#
        • I think this is a very nice rig. Might have to be the one we get.
        • This is our second choice TT but we haven’t been able to find one to tour. For more information see: Travel Trailers Currently in the Running
        • This is very similar to the Wilderness WD 2850 BH. Nearly the same floor plan.
      • Nt king 27 bhds 33′
        • HW 780#
        • Kitchen island
        • Dealer Stock Only so likely this isn’t being made anymore.
      • Nt king 26 dbss 32′
        • HW 660#
        • Tight on closet space and no pantry?
        • Tight on exterior storage
        • Probably too small for us and it’s weird it has a higher dry HW than the 28 DBSS.
    • Wilderness
      • Wd 2875 bh 34′
        • Kitchen island
        • HW 650#
        • Dealer Stock Only so likely this isn’t being made anymore.
      • Wd 2850 bh 33′
        • HW 544#
        • If this is the same floor plan or nearly the same as the 28 DBSS, why are the HW’s so different?
      • Toured a 36′ Model on 6/9/17 at Minneapolis Trailer Sales
        • Personnel there seemed a little pushy and didn’t believe us when we told them what we wanted.
        • They sold the 2850 unit before we could look at it so they wanted us to buy something else.
        • The unit we looked at, even though it was new, had extra, non-factory caulking around the gutter extensions that was already cracked and peeling.
          • Left me wondering about the quality of Heartland RVs. Maybe was just the camper we looked at and maybe it truly wasn’t a new TT that we were lead to believe.
    • Sundance SD XLT TT 292 bh 32′
      • HW 675#
      • Kitchen island
      • CPAP machine space? Doesn’t look like it.
      • Tighter toilet space
      • Dealer Stock Only so likely this isn’t being made anymore.
    • Mallard M29 33′
      • Dealer Stock Only so likely this isn’t being made anymore.
  • Crossroads
    • Sunset trail grand reserve ss28bh 33′
      • Tight bathroom space
      • Might have a lot of storage
      • HW 656#
      • Front window!
    • Sunset trail super lite ss264bh 31′
      • Tight bathroom
      • HW 658#
      • No storage?
    • Volante vl27bk 29′
      • Toured on 6/9/17 at Pleasureland RV in St. Cloud
      • NOT GOOD
        • Wallpaper pealing
        • Very small and cramped.
        • Leaves me to wonder about the quality of other Crossroads RVs?
  • Palomino
    • SolAire 267bhsk 31′
      • HW 759#
      • Don’t like bathroom
  • Cruiser
    • Embrace EL270 33′
      • HW 640#
      • El275 is similar
